J.R. Vinagro performed demolition of 13 bridges within the Route 6/10 Interchange Reconstruction project for Rhode Island Department of Transportation. This includes multiple bridges over the railroads, elevated ramps over the highway, and the connecting retaining walls.
This design-build project required extensive planning and flexibility due to the many project constraints and the aggressive schedule. Multiple bridges and phases required work over the railroad. Railroad work is only allowed during short windows of track outages in the middle of the shift. Sequencing the work and planning with the railroad is a major challenge, as the outages are not consistent and subject to last-minute cancelations.
Success on this project was accomplished through a strong working relationship with the General Contractor and problem solving to accommodate for changes as the design progressed. In working with our engineering consultant, JRV responded quickly to design changes to keep the project on schedule. The work was also sequenced to ensure our crews were ready to work over the railroad on short notice. JRV’s large pool of equipment and resources are critical in maintaining the level of flexibility that made this project a success.
